What is OpenFront?
OpenFront is a free multiplayer real-time strategy game that began as a fork and rewrite of WarFront.io and grew into a spiritual successor to Territorial.io. Matches play out on maps based on the real world and its regions, and the code is fully open source on GitHub under the openfrontio/OpenFrontIO repository. You can play online against other people, mix humans with bots, or practice against bots alone. A match ends in domination when one player holds 80 percent of all land, or in elimination when a player loses their last territory.
How to play
Every match starts with choosing a spawn point. You expand by sending troops from your own land into adjacent tiles, and every tile you take grows the army income you can spend on the next push. Land elevation changes the cost: mountains take longer to capture than grasslands. As your economy grows you build cities, ports, defenses, and missile silos. On the water, trade ships automatically route between ports and fund cities, defenses, and nukes, while warships can intercept enemy trade ships. Nukes exist mainly to break a player who is snowballing out of control, so leaders are never fully safe. Alliances are informal deals between players, and deterrence matters as much as raw troop counts.
Tips for beginners
Expand quickly in the first minutes, but never leave your border naked; a player who overextends gets farmed by neighbors. Keep an eye on elevation and route your expansion through cheap grassland before tackling mountains. Build income early rather than hoarding troops, because a bigger economy compounds. Watch the map for one player absorbing a neighbor too fast, and be ready to join a coalition or invest in a silo before that snowball reaches you. Finally, play a few bot-only matches to learn build timings before taking your borders into a public lobby.
