Dragon Rider Trial

Last updated: 2026-10-16

An original interactive fiction game about a dragon rider selection ritual. Five decisions, three traits, and seven dragons waiting on the terrace at dusk. The choices you make decide which colour comes to you, and running it again with different answers is the only way to fill the codex.

5 stages · 7 dragons · no download

Five decisions stand between you and a bonded dragon. Every choice pushes you toward nerve, cunning or resolve, and the profile you finish with decides which of 7 dragons comes to the terrace. Run it again with different answers to fill the codex.

How the trial works

Five stages, three choices each, and no takebacks. Every option adds points to nerve, cunning or resolve, and the bars at the top of the game show exactly where you stand after each decision. There is no fail state and no timer, so you can read every choice properly. At the end of the fifth stage the seven dragons land on the terrace and the profile you built decides which one steps forward.

What nerve, cunning and resolve actually mean

Nerve is acting before you are certain: walking through the middle of the crowd, closing on the largest animal on the terrace. Cunning is solving the problem rather than charging it, like levering a fallen beam off a pinned dragonet or resting through the gusts on the cliff stair. Resolve is the willingness to spend yourself on something that is not scored, carrying another candidate's pack, or splinting a stranger's leg while the clock runs.

Why the colour of the dragon matters

The colour correspondence is the part people ask about most, and in this game it is a direct read-out of your run. Crimson bonds with riders who move first, azure with riders who think first, onyx with riders who simply do not stop. Amber and palewing want nerve or resolve with a stubborn streak behind it, violet wants cunning with patience, and verdant wants nerve and cunning in the same person. Gilded is the outlier: it only answers to a run that stayed almost perfectly balanced, which is why most players find it last.

Filling the codex

Seven dragons, seven different profiles, one codex. Because the outcome is a straight function of your three stats, you can deliberately steer a run: pick the two most reckless options at every stage to meet crimson, or spread your choices evenly to chase the gilded dragon. The codex under the game shows which colours you have already bonded with and keeps the locked ones as silhouettes until you find them.

Why we built it

Dragon rider selection is one of the most searched interactive fiction premises of the moment, and almost every page about it is either a summary of somebody else's book or a thin listicle. We wanted a version you can actually play in a browser tab in three minutes, with writing and dragons that are ours. It is fully client-side, needs no account, and works on a phone.

Dragon colour meanings at a glance

If the outcome you want is a specific colour, this is the whole system in one table. Match your choices to the profile on the right and the dragon on the left is what you will meet.

Dragon colours, their element, temperament and the nerve, cunning and resolve profile each one bonds with.

Profiles are scored out of 10 per trait. A full run spends 15 points across the three traits, so no build reaches the maximum in more than one of them.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Dragon Rider Trial?

It is an original interactive fiction game we built for RandoPlay. You make five decisions during a dragon rider selection ritual, each one pushing you toward nerve, cunning or resolve, and the profile you finish with decides which of seven dragons bonds with you.

How do you get a specific dragon?

Each dragon answers to a different stat profile. Crimson wants nerve, azure wants cunning, onyx wants resolve. Amber and palewing want nerve or resolve backed by the other, violet combines cunning with resolve, and verdant wants nerve and cunning together. Gilded is the rare one: you need nerve, cunning and resolve all within a couple of points of each other.

How many dragons can I bond with?

Eight. Every dragon you bond with is added to the codex at the bottom of the game, and the codex is saved in your browser so it survives a refresh. Running the trial again with different answers is the only way to fill it.

Does the game save my progress?

The dragons you have discovered and the number of trials you have run are stored in your browser's local storage. There is no account and nothing is sent to a server, so clearing your browser data resets the codex.

Is this based on a book or an existing game?

No. The Dragon Rider Trial is an original RandoPlay game with its own setting, dragons and writing. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or adapted from any book, series or other game.
